Five cool, queer albums stand out from the crowd
by Anthony Glassman
Albums come out every week, hundreds each year, whizzing by faster than the eye can see or, for that matter, the ear can hear. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with all of them, although attention must be paid to make sure nothing good or interesting is missed.
For instance, Ani DiFranco, perennial über-babe of the college circuit, is back with her relatively new album Evolve on her Righteous Babe Records. On Evolve, DiFranco effortlessly segues from bluesy jazz on tracks

like "Promised Land" and "In the Way" to her more familiar acoustic folk on the eponymous "Evolve." Perhaps the only complaint one could really level against the album the overpackaging: It takes more time to get it out of the case than it does to listen to it. On the plus side, it's really attractive overpackaging.
For those who like their pop music in easy-to-handle pieces, perhaps they would like something Bitesize. With two albums and an EP under their belt, along with a guitarist/vocalist
who is transitioning from male to female, Bitesize's view of the world from their home base in San Francisco is unique, as are their riffs, perhaps most reminiscent of the geekstoner axis perfected by the Pixies.
Speaking of geeky stoners, that's
say the CD is really annoying, but it isn't. Just like the Giants and the Femmes required a period to get people used to them, a safe bet would be that the same holds true for these guys.
While Ani DiFranco appeals mostly to the grrlz in the audience, and Bitesize and Testosterone Kills would probably appeal to the alterna-boys, Phillips & Driver's Together goes for both in one fell swoop.
Gretchen Phillips from Two Nice Girls and gay crooner David Driver got together to release an album of some of the oddest ballads ever, covering Bad Company, Leonard Cohen, Broadway standards and original songs filled with unrequited lust for Starsky and Hutch, Julie Andrews and martyred saints.

what is most readily brought to mind by Testosterone Kills' debut album, War All the Time. The band bills itself as electro-folk or anti-folk. One has trouble grasping exactly what "anti-folk" is supposed to denote. Punk rock would seem more "anti-folk" than this stuff, although "electro-folk" is quite accurate.
Picture They Might Be Giants, only more gay and less funny. no, that would be the Violent Femmes. Okay, picture the Violent Femmes taking themselves seriously, and that would be Testosterone Kills.
The first knee-jerk reaction would be to

is deservedly given good attention here. The Twilight Of The Golds (1997) Schlesinger played a doctor in the teleplay with Faye Dunaway and Brendan Fraser. The film deals with the future of genetic engineering and the fate of gay foetuses. The film is actually very strong and Schlesinger's performance is solid and dignified.
The Next Best Thing (2000) A dramaccomedy with Madonna and Rupert Everett, this film was lethally criticized by the critics. The two stars play best friends one a straight woman, Abbie, the other a gay man, Robert who decide to have a child together. Five years later, Abbie falls in love with a straight man and wants to move away with

It's a little torchy, a little twangy, and a musical mélange that
could best be completed with the addition of a young k.d. lang.
A word of warning, however: Bar None Records will not be held responsible for anyone who decides
to end it all because they lisItened to this album while feeling
a little blue. It will
not pull the average listener out of depression, that's for damn sure. For "quirky," however,
the
winners are the Hidden Cam-
eras, a queer music collective from Toronto whose debut album The
Smell of Our Own was eagerly anticipated by the media in their hometown. The band, in fact, was featured in virtually every Toronto newspaper and alternative weekly prior to becoming the first Canadian band signed to Rough Trade Records, an unintentionally ironic bit of synchronicity.
Oddly British-Invasion-sounding riffs combine with occasionally eccentric instrumentation to produce a thoroughly enjoyable alterna-pop album. From all accounts, though, their live shows are what truly sets them apart from other bands, with 15 musicians, two go-go boys, and more joie de vivre than one can shake a stick at.
Well, those are five albums we can now purchase and enjoy. What else is out there, cool and queer, one must ask? Only time can tell.
her and Robert's little boy Sam, and a nasty custody battle ensues.
Schlesinger was known for his professionalism, his enthusiasm for film and people, and his utter dedication to the art and craft of cinema. He was also said to be incredibly loyal to his fellow artists throughout his career, and he often worked with the same composers, cameramen, editors and production designers all spanning decades of his work.
Schlesinger's mark on Hollywood is indelible. He was a celluloid frontiersman and many of his works will live on. He made it easier for many in Hollywood today to be more open not only about their own queerness but also about the need to tell queer stories that are complex, insightful and utterly human.
On behalf of those of us he influenced, directly or indirectly, I say, with utmost love and respect, "Goodnight, cowboy."
